Given the nature of their line of duty, U. S. Marines were very likely to have been exposed to Asbestos while they served their country. Being exposed to Asbestos put them in high risk of later developing life-threatening diseases such as mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses.
Like with all the other branches of the U. S. Military, Asbestos has seen many uses in the Marine Corps because of its superior heat resisting properties and affordability.
It is highly advisable that all Marine veterans should be aware of the dangers Asbestos posed to them or their families and seek legal help.
The U. S. Marines operated aircraft, ships, and armored vehicles that were, at the time, constructed using Asbestos materials. Furthermore, the Marine Corps worked very closely with the U. S. Navy, which used the most Asbestos products out of all the military branches.
Marine veterans risked Asbestos exposure while spending time aboard military ships, or in shipyards. Military ships were full of Asbestos products, being present in sleeping quarters, boiler and engine rooms and even around pipes, all for insulation purposes. Shipyards were also a danger because they harbored large amounts of Asbestos materials to use for shipbuilding.
While on land, Marines were being exposed to Asbestos in sleeping quarters. Flooring tiles, ceiling and roofing, piping and boiler insulation were all made using Asbestos for fireproofing. Furthermore, military vehicles also contained dangerous amounts of asbestos in brakes, gaskets and engine parts.
Although Asbestos is no longer being used since the late 1970s, many military bases, ships, and vehicles still contain Asbestos and pose a threat to members of the U. S. Military even today.
