Out of all branches of the U. S. Military, the Navy used the highest amounts of Asbestos materials. It was used in the construction of ships and submarines, and it could also be found in very large quantities in shipyards. This put Navy veterans at the highest risk of developing severe asbestos-related illnesses such as Mesothelioma.
This high demand for Asbestos was caused by the fact that it was a very reliable fire-retardant and it was relatively inexpensive, making it perfect for fireproofing ships and submarines.
It is highly advisable that all Navy veterans should be aware of the dangers Asbestos posed to them or their families and seek legal help.
Navy veterans used to serve on military ships most of the time, which put them at very high risk of Asbestos exposure. Any place or component in the vessels that needed heat resistance contained Asbestos:
Even though Asbestos was no longer used in the construction of ships after the 1970s, many vessels that were built using Asbestos products remained operational for many years.
Apart from always being around Asbestos when staying on ships, Navy veterans sometimes did repair work and maintenance to various parts of the ship. This caused microscopic Asbestos fibers to break apart from the materials and fill the poorly ventilated cabins, gravely endangering crew members. But not only U. S. Navy members were aboard these military ships. Sailors, other warship personnel, and even members of the other branches of the military stayed for long times on these ships, putting them at risk as well. Furthermore, Navy veterans were sometimes around or operated land vehicles that also contained Asbestos materials at the time, further increasing the risk of Asbestos exposure.
Service members who served in the Navy, Coast Guard, or other maritime branches of the U.S. Military, spent countless hours aboard vessels and were exposed to asbestos during this time. Ships that were constructed or repaired up until the late 1970s were filled with asbestos materials both above and below deck.
